Near-infrared Observations of Iras Minisurvey Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Near-infrared photometry at /, H, and K has been obtained for 82 galaxies from the IRAS minisurvey, a sample of infrared-selected galaxies. The near-infrared colors of these galaxies are similar to those of normal field spiral galaxies, but cover a larger range inJ — H and H — K. There is evidence of a tighter correlation between the nearand far-infrared emission than exists between the far-infrared and the visible emission. These results suggest that hot-dust emission contributes to the 2.2 //m luminosity, and extinction by dust affects both the near-infrared colors and the visible luminosities. In addition, there is an indication that the far-infrared emission in many of the minisurvey galaxies is coming from a strong nuclear component.

STUDY OF DEEP IRAS FIELDS AT 60 jmm
A selected subset of IRAS pointed observations has been examined to study infrared galaxies at 60 /¿m in the 50 to 100 mJy range. The observations cover a total area of 20 sq° and contain a total of 746 sources with signal to instrumental noise ratios SNR >5. Detailed observations of one of these fields at visual, near-infrared, radio and x-ray wavelengths indicate that these sources, the faint...
متن کاملThe Iras Bright Galaxy Sample. v. Multibeam Photometry of Galaxies
Forty-seven galaxies from the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample with infrared luminosities Lm > 10 1 Lq have been measured at 1.3, 1.65, and 2.2 ¡im with beam diameters of 17", 33", and 55". These measurements, combined with 5" and 10" observations presented in an earlier paper, provide an opportunity to study the spatial distribution of the near-infrared emission in luminous IRAS galaxies. It is found...
متن کاملAn IRAS High Resolution Image Restoration (HIRES) Atlas of All Interacting Galaxies in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample
The importance of far-infrared observations in our understanding of extreme activity in interacting and merging galaxies has been illustrated by many studies. Even though two decades have passed since its launch, the most complete all-sky survey to date from which far-infrared selected galaxy samples can be chosen is still that of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). However, the spatial...
متن کاملFollow - Up Near - infrared Spectroscopy of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies observed by ISO ⋆
We present low resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of an unbiased sample of 24 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), selected from samples previously observed spectroscopically in the mid-infrared with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Qualitatively, the near-infrared spectra resemble those of starbursts. Only in one ULIRG, IRAS 04114−5117E, do we find spectroscopic evidence for AGN a...
متن کاملA pair of leading spiral arms in a luminous infrared galaxy ? 1
Leading spiral arms are a rare phenomenon. We present here one of the very few convincing candidates of spiral arms opening counter-intuitively in the same direction as the galaxy disk is rotating. This detection in a luminous IR galaxy (LIRG) IRAS 18293-3134 is based on near infrared (NIR) adaptive optics imaging with the Very Large Telescope and long-slit NIR spectroscopy with the AngloAustra...
